On
Transylvanian Alps, Dracula Land
|
LE MONDE "Dans les Carpates,
Dracula aura son parc d'attractions"
"On Transylvanian Alps, Dracula will have his entertainment
park"
Sighisoara, the
birthplace of Vlad
the Impaler, who inspired the mythical count, won the DraculaLand
project. Sighisoara, 300 kilometers (180 miles) northwest of Bucharest,
won the $40 million project because of its proximity to Sibiu
airport. Some of the money were supposed to be used to restore
the city's 15th century fortress.
"We are trying to rebuild this historic city and furthermore
revive the tourist industry," Tourism Ministery representant
told the Associated Press.
After consulting an agency, the Tourism Minister changed at the
beginning of 2003 the Dracula
Park location to Snagov.
The project is expected to be completed in 2004.
Vlad, a 15th century prince, earned his nickname because of his
penchant for impaling captured Turks and other enemies on stakes.
Sighisoara,
also known as Schaessburg, is strongly influenced by German traditions
dating back to the 12th century when ethnic Germans settled there.
Bram Stoker's Dracula novel (1897), was the first book about
the count, now there are over 200 movies about Dracula
- the vampire.
